Was it like this, Sir?
This paranormal story is from 1980's Bangalore. Bangalore then was a real garden city. IT revolution had not yet started. The metropolitan has just started to come up.
Anil Shanbhag, popularly known as "Anni" by his friends had come to Bangalore in search of a job. Since he was not financially stable yet, he stayed in his friend's house. His friend was working on a night shift in a private firm.
It was a small house located near Shivajinagar. The location was a bit deserted those days.
As usual, his friend left for work at night. Alone at home, Anni was feeling bored. Therefore he decided to go to the theatre and watch a movie. Kannada's legend film star Rajkumar's, the recent movie was released. Anni being a great fan of Rajkumar, how could he miss it?
Outside the city, there were no film theatres those days. They would have a tent and a projector to show the movie. Anni went seeing the last movie show for the day.
To his surprise, there were only three or four people in the tent. "Such a super hit movie and no crowd", Anni was surprised.
After enjoying the movie, he left the tent. He looked at his old HMT Janata watch it was exactly, 12:35 am. It was a full moon day. The moonlight was bright enough to lit the entire road. He looked outside the long road, which was deserted and produced a spooky feeling. It was like the setting of "Ramsey brothers" horror scene. The cold breeze was blowing around. Two or three companions in the film tent turned out to be drinkers. They departed from the scene without any trace. The extensive road was sparsely lit. Many lamps were blinking, some dimly illuminated.
Anni had barely walked about twenty meters. At a distance, beneath a dimly lit street lamp, Anni saw a woman selling salted peanuts. The visible smoke from newly roasted peanuts was coming from a distance. At night the smell was too hard to resist.
Anni once thought, "so deserted place and alone women selling peanuts?". Anni thought it was odd, but his taste buds had already been activated by the smell of roasted peanuts.Gradually he walked towards the peanuts seller. In that cold climate and flickering lights, Anni has lost a bit of reasoning. It gave him some confidence as he approached. The vendor was seated near a dim street light. Even though this lamp was not blinking, but the light was a bit dull to recognize the women.
She was sitting on a torn carpet. Most of her face was covered by long hair. She was mid-aged women may be of the early forties. There was a kerosene stove on which she was roasting peanuts. Anni liked the kerosine smell and the peanuts roasted smell was also mouth-watering.
Anni was in very much confused state, This state occurs when you are scared or suddenly something happens which you are not accepting. This equally occurs when you are dancing in deep music, you are merely putting steps before you can think. The mind reacts too fast, and you feel you are not in control of your body. During such stages, the brain stops reasoning for a moment.
In that state, Anni inquired the women, " What is the cost of salted peanuts?"
After a pause of about ten seconds, "one rupee sir", came the reply. The voice was a bit mysterious. But Anni neglected it.
Anni searched for this wallet. He fetched two one rupee coins, from it and placed it in the rupee jar near the women. "Give me two paper roll of salted peanuts and give a good roasted one."
The woman started preparing the peanuts. She used her left hand to roast the peanuts in the pan.
"Maybe she must be left-handed women, just like the famous cricketer Salim Durani." Anni laughed thinking it.
She wrapped the peanuts in the paper and when she extended her right hand to give peanuts, Anni got the biggest shock of his life. Her hand was cover with woolly hair, she did not have nails but claws, it was just like a beast hand.
His legs were trembling, the shock left Anni motionless. With the next breath, Anni started shouting and running. "Ghost...Ghost help." Anni was running directionlessly without seeing back. He ran so fast as if he would break Milka Singh's record.
He reached a place near the current Shivaji Nagar Cantonment station. He saw an auto-rickshaw parked. Anni felt some relief. Still huffing, he reached the auto.
Looking at him, the auto driver gave him some water to drink. Anni was still in shock. Anni sat on the auto and told him the address.
After a few minutes, the driver asked, "Sir, what happened? why are you soo scared?"
Anni explained all that happened, "Maybe that place is haunted. Her hand was too scary"
Hear this driver laughed strangely, turning to Anni revealing his hand he said, " Was it like this, Sir?".
This is the last thing Anni remembers. He fainted and fell.
